Devoted Educators
The First Encounter
Berkatu Garba, 44 years old, married with 5 children. She has been working here for 9 months as a manager. When I met Berkatu, I was immediately struck by the determination and perseverance on her face. As I chatted with her, I wanted to know what the biggest problem here was.
Limited Resources
The number of students is so high that more classrooms are required. However, the state can only meet the school's operational needs. Teachers earn the highest salaries on the list. Teachers here earn an average salary of $200. With this amount, they can only cover their basic needs, such as food and shelter. In fact, this amount is not always sufficient for one month, sometimes two or three.
Right to Education
Each of the school's six classrooms seats at least 52 students. However, hundreds of students in the village are unable to attend school due to a shortage of classrooms. If an additional building were built here, hundreds of students from nearby villages would have equal access to education. However, not only were additional classrooms required, but also plumbing and hygiene supplies.
Berkatu's eyes lit up when I told him that Time of Goodness would be building 13 new classrooms here.
Investing the Future
Our experience in Niger has motivated us to work on long-term projects. Basic needs such as education, water, and hygiene are the most important factors influencing the future of these communities. Berkatu's and other educators' efforts are only part of the fight to ensure children's access to education.
Education is essential for lifting communities out of poverty. As Time of Goodness, we are here to bring about change that will last for generations, not just a moment. We benefit from the experience and knowledge of our local partners as we work together to implement our projects.
Berkatu and other altruistic people around the world face significant challenges. But their determination is greater. With your help, we can help underserved communities look to the future with hope and dream big.
